Our Mission

Our mission is to create and maintain a fund for the benefit of all students enrolled in Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) schools located in Apex, North Carolina.


Our vision is to provide or fund programs, not included in the WCPSS district budget, that will enhance learning opportunities for students and/or educational training and resources available to educators in areas including, but not limited to, academics, the arts, technology and enrichment.


To promote creativity, innovation and collaboration within the WCPSS schools located in Apex by

  • Awarding raised funds to innovative programs and projects proposed by teachers and faculty in a formal grant submission and acceptance process

  • Maintaining and creating programs that align with evidenced-based practices in education and instructional design.

  • Supporting the WCPSS Strategic Plan

  • Increasing the Apex area community’s awareness of, support of and involvement with the public schools.

Barbara Conroy

Co-founder & President

Barb earned her Master’s in Education from UNC Chapel Hill. During her twelve years working in NJ public schools, she taught preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade and special education. Barb is currently a stay at home mom. She is an active member of the PTA and regularly volunteers in her daughter’s classrooms and is proud to be leading the APSF in its mission to maintain a fund for the benefit of all students enrolled in the 18 WCPSS schools with an Apex mailing address.


Stephanie Mitchell

Co-founder & Secretary

Stephanie is a former PTA president who has committed endless hours to improving the educational experience for students, their families, teachers, and staff in Apex. Stephanie holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Colorado-Boulder and has several years of experience as a research assistant, conducting behavioral, intellectual, and developmental testing with infants and young children. She is currently a stay-at-home mom of three boys at Apex schools.


Danny mamo


Danny is Senior Vice President within Alternative Markets for Arch Capital Group (US) Inc. (“Arch”).  Prior to joining Arch, Danny was a Director within AIG’s Enterprise Risk Management division where he led credit performance management at Seterus, Inc, a specialty mortgage servicer.  Additionally, he held various positions at several insurance companies including Genworth Financial, Nationwide Insurance, & United Guaranty. He holds both a B.S. and M.A. in Economics from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.  


Susan Evans


Susan is a business management finance and accounting professional with a B.S. in Business Administration and Accounting from UNC-Chapel Hill. She has served on several boards including WCPSS Board of Education, N.C. Schools Board Association Action Committee Board of Directors, and N.C. Foundation for Public School Children Board of Directors. In 2018, she was elected to the Wake County Board of Commissioners in District 4. Susan and her husband, Chuck, have two daughters and live in Apex.


Jacques Gilbert


Jacques Gilbert is a former captain of the Apex Police Department and founder of Blue Lights College. He has also written three books, is a certified personal trainer, and is the founder of TheVine919. In 2015, Jacques was invited to the White House and recognized by President Obama as a "Champion of Change" for his work building the Rodgers Family Skate Plaza. In 2016, Jacques was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Apex Chamber of Commerce.

In July, 2019 Jacques became Mayor-Elect of Apex, North Carolina. He will take office in December. Jacques, an Apex native, is married to his wife Meshara and has two children, Kalabria and Logan.


Michelle Woods

Programs Committee Chairperson

Michelle is an award-winning educational leader and currently works for Wake County Public School System. Michelle is also the owner of Woods Life Coaching located in Cary, NC. She lives in Apex with her husband, two teenage boys, and dog Chewie.


Kristy Buchanan

Communications Committee Chairperson

Kristy is Design Manager at the Town of Cary with over 15 years of experience in marketing & communications, self-publishing, web design, and print design. She and her husband live in Apex with their son, daughter and dog, Charlie. Both children attend Apex Elementary where Kristy manages the Apex PTA’s website.


David Yetter

Fundraising Committee Chairperson

David is an actuary with the North Carolina Department of Insurance. He is a former school board member (Yukon, Oklahoma) and is married to a WCPSS Speech Pathologist. He and his wife have two sons attending Apex area public schools.
